Author bio
Linda Bailey was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she grew up as a reader, a daydreamer, and one of three sisters. She has recalled a childhood full of neighbourhood games, library books, and lively make-believe. Those early habits stayed with her.
In her twenties, Bailey travelled widely, much of it by ship, and worked in England and Australia. Later she moved to Vancouver, earned a B.A. and an M.Ed. from the University of British Columbia, and built a varied working life that included teaching, editing, and travel-agency work.
Then she began writing seriously after becoming a parent.
Her first book, How Come the Best Clues Are Always in the Garbage?, arrived in 1992 and introduced Stevie Diamond, a funny, determined twelve-year-old detective from Vancouver. The Stevie Diamond books mix real kid problems with oddball crimes, missed clues, and plenty of quick comebacks. Stevie is capable, but she can also get things wrong, which makes the mysteries feel lively rather than overly neat.
Bailey has since written nearly forty books for young readers, moving easily among picture books, early chapter books, middle-grade adventures, mysteries, and nonfiction. That range is part of the fun of following her work. One book may feature a dog throwing a party while his people are away, while the next sends three siblings into the past or introduces a young reader to Mary Shelley.
The six Stanley books grew from Bailey's real dog, Sophie. In Stanley's Party, a big, lovable dog breaks the rules with one paw on the couch, then turns an empty house into a canine celebration. Later stories send Stanley on a wild ride, out to sea, into a dog show, and even into a school. Readers tend to enjoy the cheerful troublemaking and the fact that every adventure is told from a dog's very confident point of view.
History also gets a comic twist in the Good Times Travel Agency books. Twins Josh and Emma Binkerton, along with their little sister Libby, are sent through time by a strange travel agency and its guidebooks. Adventures in Ancient Egypt, Adventures with the Vikings, and Adventures in the Ice Age combine fast-moving fictional scrapes with facts about daily life in the past. The newer Time Travel Guides editions bring several of those trips back in a graphic-novel format.
Bailey's picture books often start with a child-sized question and let it grow wonderfully strange. If Kids Ruled the World imagines a place where recess and birthday cake get the respect they deserve. If You Happen to Have a Dinosaur turns a prehistoric giant into a wildly impractical household helper. Princesses Versus Dinosaurs lets two groups argue over who owns the story, then asks them to make room for each other.
She also enjoys telling true stories about imaginative people. Mary Who Wrote Frankenstein follows Mary Shelley from her daydreaming childhood to the ghost-story challenge that helped spark Frankenstein. Arthur Who Wrote Sherlock looks at Arthur Conan Doyle's long road to creating Sherlock Holmes, and the complicated relationship he later had with his famous detective.
Bailey lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, close to the ocean. Her books have travelled widely too, reaching readers in many languages. Across mysteries, monsters, dogs, pirates, and dinosaurs, she keeps returning to curiosity, courage, friendship, and the kind of imagination that can turn an ordinary day into a very good story.
