Series background & context
The Good Times Travel Agency series follows the Binkertons, twins Josh and Emma and their younger sister, Libby. They are ordinary siblings until they wander into the very odd Good Times Travel Agency, run by the equally odd Julian T. Pettigrew. His travel guides do much more than offer advice. Open the wrong one, and you may find yourself in another era.
That is exactly what keeps happening to the Binkertons.
Each book drops the children into a different moment in history, including ancient Egypt, medieval Europe, Viking Scandinavia, ancient Greece, ancient China, and the Ice Age. The trips are never smooth. Josh, Emma, and Libby get separated, chased, stranded, or caught up in local trouble, while trying to understand a world with unfamiliar rules. Getting home depends on working together and paying attention to Pettigrew's guidebook.
The series has a lively comic-book feel. The fictional adventure runs alongside factual sections about food, homes, clothing, work, religion, travel, warfare, and everyday customs. That structure means readers can follow the Binkertons' problems for the story, then pause to learn why the setting works the way it does. The history is part of the action rather than an add-on at the end.
The sibling dynamic gives the books their spark. Josh can be skeptical, Emma is often practical, and little Libby is fearless in the way only a younger sibling can be. She is also very good at slipping away at the worst possible moment. Their bickering feels familiar, but when a pyramid, Viking ship, palace, or cave becomes dangerous, they pull together.
These are adventures with real stakes, but the tone stays light and funny. The children complain about the weather, the food, and the lack of modern comforts, which makes the past feel immediate rather than distant. A trip to ancient Egypt can involve Nile mud and pyramid building. A medieval visit can mean hard labour in a castle under attack. The Ice Age is cold, hungry, and full of animals that are much bigger than the family pet.
The original series works well in publication order because the strange rules of the agency and the Binkertons' personalities are introduced in Adventures in Ancient Egypt. After that, each book offers a mostly self-contained trip, so readers can also choose a favourite period and jump in. It is a good fit for kids who enjoy graphic storytelling, reluctant time travelers, and history that comes with chases, mishaps, and a way home that is never quite simple.
