Series background & context

The Soldiers of PATCH-COM series is Michele Gwynn's military romantic suspense saga about wounded service members who are given another shot at life, love, and dangerous work. PATCH-COM is a secret program operating from Camp Lazarus, a hidden rehabilitation facility beneath Area 51. Its mission is to use advanced technology to rebuild injured special operations soldiers and send them back into the field.

The series opens with Secondhand Soldier. Green Beret Sergeant Harold Tyler, called Eastwood, loses a leg in combat and expects his career to be over. Instead, he is taken to the facility, fitted with advanced prosthetics, and reunited with Joely Winter, the inventor overseeing the technology and a woman he previously met in London. A mission involving stolen military technology and a possible traitor puts both the program and their relationship at risk.

Recovery is only the beginning.

Each later book centers on another member of the PATCH-COM team. In Second Chance Soldier, Army Ranger Gerry Maclean, called Mac, is sent into cartel violence to evacuate civilians and protect Connie Wheeler, an American hostage with reasons to fear going home. His trauma and sense of responsibility make the mission as personal as it is dangerous.

Second Breath Soldier follows retired Navy SEAL Vincent Torres, known as Griz, after he survives a cartel firing squad and is brought unwillingly into PATCH-COM. While he struggles with injury and anger, he becomes involved in an operation against a trafficking ring and grows close to Jessica Holiday, a ballet teacher whose life is also pulled into danger.

The team operates where official channels get complicated.

In Silent Night Soldier, Army medic Ben Holiday goes to Moscow to help an Israeli intelligence operation. When he rescues Doctor Irina Petrovna from an attack, the mission expands into a race through Russia involving political dissidents, missing agents, and a hunter from Irina's past.

The wider throughline is the unit itself. The soldiers carry physical injuries, trauma, and private fears, but their loyalty to one another remains steady. Romance is central to every installment, alongside covert operations, international threats, and rescue missions. Start with Secondhand Soldier to understand Camp Lazarus, PATCH-COM's technology, and the team dynamic, then continue in order as familiar characters return and the program's world gets bigger.
