Shift Happens takes Peterman's humor and drops it into a shifter-heavy world built around second chances, investigations, and a heroine who would really rather not deal with her ex if she can help it. The series starts with Essie, an agent working for the Werewolf Treaty Federation, who gets sent back to the place she left behind after a brutal heartbreak. Unfortunately for her, the job comes with missing women, dangerous secrets, and Hank, the werewolf she never fully got over.

That setup gives the series two engines right away. One is romantic, because Essie and Hank still have history, heat, and a mountain of unfinished business. The other is procedural, because Essie is not just going home to brood. She is there to investigate threats in the paranormal community, and the deeper she digs, the more tangled the world becomes.

She does not dig alone.

One of the joys of this series is the supporting cast, especially Dwayne, Essie's flamboyant vampire best friend, along with the rest of the extended crew that grows around her. Peterman uses that group to keep the tone funny even when the stakes rise. Dragons, council politics, supernatural experiments, and pack trouble all enter the picture as the books move forward, but the friendships keep the series grounded.

The books blend romance and mystery in a very readable way. There is action, but it never loses Peterman's comic timing. There is emotional baggage, but it is usually followed by something outrageous enough to make everybody, reader included, take a breath and laugh. Essie is good company for exactly that reason. She gets hurt, gets mad, gets back up, and keeps going.

If you want werewolves with banter, a strong second-chance thread, and a paranormal world that keeps getting weirder the longer you stay in it, Shift Happens is an easy recommendation. It has pack politics and danger, sure, but it also has heart, absurdity, and the kind of ride that never stays calm for long.
