Series background & context

Hot Damned is the big, messy, loud paranormal world many readers most strongly connect with Robyn Peterman. The series begins with Astrid, a fashion-loving woman whose attempt to quit smoking goes spectacularly wrong when she wakes up undead and discovers the supernatural world is very real. That would be enough for one book. Peterman, naturally, adds a profane guardian angel, a dangerous attraction, royal vampire politics, and a family tree that runs straight through Heaven and Hell.

At first, Astrid is the center of everything. She is learning what it means to be a Vampyre, what the Chosen One business means, and why everybody suddenly seems to think the fate of entire immortal populations belongs on her shoulders. Her relationship with Ethan gives the series one of its main emotional anchors, even while the books keep throwing demons, trolls, ancient curses, and deeply inconvenient relatives in their path.

Then the world gets bigger. Much bigger.

Later books branch out to other members of the immortal clan, including demons, warriors, royals, and the kind of supernatural relatives who can ruin dinner, a wedding, or the end of the world in a single afternoon. Mother Nature, God, Satan, and various not-exactly-stable immortals all get room to cause problems. That expanding cast is part of the fun. Even when a later book shifts focus, it still feels tied to the same gloriously dysfunctional family.

The setting jumps around a lot, Kentucky, Australia, Hell, Heaven, and anywhere else the plot needs a fresh disaster. But the tone stays steady. These books are paranormal romance played for speed and comedy, full of sharp banter, over-the-top situations, found family, and surprisingly sincere love stories under all the chaos.

If you like your urban fantasy tidy, this is not that. If you like it rude, romantic, ridiculous, and built around people who would absolutely go to war for each other while insulting each other the entire time, Hot Damned is exactly the right kind of madness.
