Author bio
Sherwood Smith started making books out of paper towels when she was six. That homemade beginning says a lot about the work she still does now. She has spent decades building stories with the same mix of play, curiosity, and sheer staying power.
She was born in 1951. In college she studied German and history, and one of the big shaping experiences of her early adult life was a year in Europe on a very lean student budget. Later she earned a master's degree in European history, which helps explain why so many of her novels care about manners, class, politics, and the long shadow of the past.
Before writing became the center of her public life, she did a little of everything. She has written about working a popcorn stand, waiting tables, nannying, bartending, and checking electrical supply orders. In the late 1970s she also worked in the film industry after a screenwriter hired her as his secretary, and that stretch of her life added another layer to the way she thinks about scenes, pacing, and dialogue.
She was learning story from every angle.
Her first published short story, Monster Mash, appeared in 1988. Not long after came novels, including the Exordium space opera written with Dave Trowbridge and the fantasy books that would grow into her long-running world of Sartorias-deles. That world goes back to her childhood, but the published books show how it expanded as she grew older, from kid-centered adventures to large historical arcs full of war, diplomacy, ghosts, and the return of magic.
Many readers meet her through Crown Duel, which has stayed in print for years because it combines rebellion, romance, and court intrigue without losing its sense of fun. Others start with Inda, a broader and more demanding epic about military training, exile, piracy, and power. Younger readers often find Wren to the Rescue first, while books like A Stranger to Command and The Spy Princess show how good Smith is at writing young people trying to understand dangerous adult systems.
She likes capable kids, complicated loyalties, and kingdoms that look tidy until you notice the cracks.
Even when the setting changes, certain interests keep returning. Hidden histories matter. So do friendship, duty, disguise, class, gender, and the question of what a decent person can do inside a broken system. Her books can be swashbuckling, courtly, funny, quietly eerie, or all of those at once. She has also written post-apocalyptic fiction with Rachel Manija Brown in Stranger and its sequels, urban fantasy in the Dobrenica books beginning with Coronets and Steel, and adventures set in the universes of Andre Norton.
Success in her career is easy to show without much fuss. She has been a Nebula finalist, twice a finalist for the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award, and one of her books was an Anne Spencer Lindbergh Honor Book. She also teaches at Viable Paradise.
She lives in Southern California with her spouse, and official bios have also mentioned their two kids and two dogs. She keeps writing across fantasy, science fiction, romance, and shorter fiction, which feels exactly right for an author whose bibliography still has the energy of someone happily making one more paper-towel book, only now on a much bigger scale.
