Series background & context

The Dobrenica books start with a wonderful collision of moods. One part is modern fantasy, with an American graduate student trying to understand ghosts and a family past that was never properly explained. Another part is old-world royal romance, full of masquerade balls, swords, hidden passages, and a tiny country with too much history for its own good.

Kim Murray is the center of the series. She is bright, stubborn, and not at all prepared for what happens when a trip to Europe turns into a plunge across the boundaries of an almost magical state. By mistake and inheritance, she gets pulled into Dobrenica's dynastic problems, and into a relationship with crown prince Alec Ysvorod.

What makes the series fun is how little Smith chooses between tones. There are ghosts and secret societies, but also court manners, political accusations, and later, time slippages and vampires. Kim may be fencing one minute and trying to untangle alternate-history consequences the next.

The setting matters. Dobrenica is a liminal place, shaped by Europe but somehow beside it as well, close enough to history to brush against Napoleon's world and far enough from ordinary reality to hold its own rules. That lets the books move from Vienna to moonlit sleigh rides, from royal scandal to haunted thresholds.

Under all the genre mixing, though, the series stays focused on trust. Kim has to decide whom to believe, what love means when politics never leave the room, and how much of herself she can risk inside a country that keeps redrawing the line between fairy tale and danger.
