Time of Daughters takes readers back into Sartorias-deles nearly a century after Inda. The old legends are still there, but the people living now are dealing with a new political reality, one in which peace looks stable until you get close enough to see its cracks.

The story begins with Danet and Arrow, content in their arranged marriage and hoping for a quiet life. That hope does not last. A treaty sends them to the royal city, and from there the plot widens into questions of succession, old grudges, ghosts, border danger, and the ways private lives get swept into public disaster.

One of the pleasures of this series is how family and statecraft keep colliding. Brothers can love one another and still want different futures. Marriage can be a comfort and also a political lever. War can begin from vanity, ambition, or the failure to understand what peace was costing other people.

The tone is larger and more historical than many of Smith's earlier kid-centered books, but it never loses the human angle. Ghosts walk the walls, armies gather, and kingdoms wobble, yet the real draw is watching people discover what kind of adults they are becoming under pressure.
