Rise of the Alliance Books in Order

The Rise of the Alliance books sit in the middle of Smith's larger Sartorias-deles history. They come after the kid-centered adventures and long after Inda in the timeline, but before the all-out catastrophe of The Norsunder War. That makes them books about gathering storm pressure.

The first thing to know is that the cast is young. Senrid of Marloven Hess, Jilo of Chwahirsland, Rel the Traveler, Liere, and other rulers, heirs, wanderers, and mages are pushed into adult roles before they are ready. They are trying to hold their countries, their friendships, and their own identities together at the exact moment old powers start moving again.

Norsunder is the looming threat. Magic, which has been slowly re-emerging, is no longer a background issue. It is becoming political, military, and deeply personal. Ancient texts, lost histories, mirror plots, and enemies who have had centuries to plan begin to connect.

What keeps the series lively is the mix of scale. One chapter may be about world politics, the next about a dangerous friendship, a covert hunt, or a young ruler realizing that the adults never really had control either. Romance arrives too, but as part of the larger tangle of loyalty and duty.

So this series is the hinge point. The alliance is not yet stable, the threat is not yet fully visible, and the people at the center are still learning what they can become. If you like fantasy that turns coming of age into statecraft, this arc does that very well.
