Series background & context

Shadow Strike is the second major phase of David Rivers’ story, taking him from hired gun in the criminal underworld to lead operator in a covert CIA program. The stakes are bigger here, shifting from personal vendettas to terrorist plots and geopolitical crises.

By the time this series begins David has already survived years as a mercenary. Now he works as a contractor for a clandestine targeted killing program, running a small paramilitary team that moves wherever the next threat appears. On paper he is just another security consultant. In reality he is one of the people sent in when the United States wants something done quietly and without attribution.

The books keep that contrast front and center. In The Enemies of My Country he comes home from an operation in Syria to a quiet mountain house in Virginia, where his wife and young daughter know nothing about his real job. When he discovers that an imminent attack on US soil targets his own hometown and mentions his family by name, the line between work and home disappears. Later missions send his team into China’s Xinjiang region to hunt a fugitive mastermind, into Nigeria to rescue kidnapped Americans from a Boko Haram stronghold, and through Colombia’s jungles and swamps in pursuit of a narco assassin tied to a terror syndicate.

As the series moves on the operating picture keeps widening. David and his teammates find themselves racing a kidnapper across Libya, infiltrating black market arms networks in Serbia, tracking a shadowy architect of mass casualty attacks through Yemen, parachuting into the Congo to confront a warlord, and trying to head off a nuclear crisis driven by a rogue Pakistani general. By the time they are operating in Iran against the world’s most dangerous terrorist, they understand that their missions are only pieces of a much larger game.

The common thread is a small, tight team trying to keep up with enemies who always seem one move ahead.

Kasper uses his own background to give these books a strong sense of realism, from the way operations are planned to the friction with political overseers who care as much about deniability as results. At the same time he never loses sight of the human side, especially the burden that secrecy and constant danger put on David’s marriage and on the families of everyone on the team.

For readers who enjoy modern special operations thrillers with a continuing cast, Shadow Strike offers a long arc you can sink into. You can jump in with The Enemies of My Country or start earlier with The Night Stalker Rescue as a prelude, then watch the stakes rise book by book until the final showdown.
