Series background & context

Shadow Strike is the second major phase of David Rivers’ journey, the part where his skills are pointed outward at global threats instead of inward at a personal vendetta. After years working as a mercenary in the criminal underworld, he now leads a small team as a contractor for a covert CIA targeted killing program.

On paper he is a security consultant who travels a lot. In reality he is one of the people sent in when the United States wants something done quietly, quickly, and without a public trail back to Washington. The teams operate with little official cover, thin political backing, and the constant sense that they can be disavowed if a mission goes wrong.

He is also trying to be a husband and father at the same time.

The series really takes shape in The Enemies of My Country, when David comes home from an operation to a secluded mountain house in Virginia where his wife and young daughter know nothing about his real job. Intelligence from a hit overseas points to an imminent terror attack on US soil, in his hometown, with his family named as targets. The line between work and home disappears overnight, and from then on every mission carries the shadow of what could be lost.

Subsequent books send his team wherever the next crisis sparks. They hunt fugitives in the mountains of China’s Xinjiang region, track kidnappers across Nigeria and Libya, infiltrate black market arms networks in Serbia, parachute into the Congo to confront a warlord, and race a rogue general who is trying to push Pakistan and India toward nuclear war. Along the way they follow a thread of mass casualty plots and a mastermind who always seems one step ahead.

Kasper uses his own military background to ground the action, from the friction of working with foreign partners to the push and pull with political overseers who care as much about optics as results. The books balance technical detail with human cost, showing how secrecy, constant danger, and impossible choices strain David’s marriage and the families of everyone on the team.

You can start Shadow Strike with The Night Stalker Rescue as a prelude or jump straight into The Enemies of My Country if you want to hit the main arc right away. However you enter, expect modern special operations thrillers that follow one tight knit unit as they try to stay ahead of enemies, bureaucracy, and their own ghosts.
