Series background & context

The David Rivers books follow one character across two connected thriller series, American Mercenary and Shadow Strike. Taken together, they read less like separate trilogies and more like a single long story about a soldier who keeps getting pulled deeper into the shadows.

When you first meet David he is an Army Ranger, a combat veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan who carries more guilt and trauma than he lets on. A sudden discharge from West Point and a secret killing he cannot take back leave him angry, self destructive, and drifting. That is when three strangers appear, men who know exactly what he did in the past and who work for a faceless crime boss known only as the Handler.

The American Mercenary novels follow David into the Handler’s Outfit, a network of former special operators who carry out jobs for the highest bidder. He goes from disposable trigger puller to a key player in missions that span Afghanistan, Africa, South America, and Eastern Europe. On the surface the work is simple, get in, complete the objective, get paid. Underneath, he is trying to solve the mystery of who betrayed his team and why they were marked for death.

Revenge keeps him moving long after any normal person would have walked away.

Shadow Strike picks up after those mercenary years, once David has survived the Outfit and found a different kind of employer. Now he runs a small paramilitary team as a contractor for a covert CIA program, the kind of unit sent in when deniability matters more than headlines. The missions are bigger in scope, from foiling terror plots on US soil to hunting architects of mass casualty attacks across China, Nigeria, Libya, Serbia, Yemen, the Congo, Pakistan, and beyond.

At the same time, he is trying to build a quiet life in the mountains of Virginia as a husband and father, keeping his real job hidden from the people he loves. That tension, the clash between family dinners and classified operations, runs through the Shadow Strike books and raises the stakes whenever enemies realize who and what they can threaten to reach him.

On this page you can follow David’s arc in whichever way fits you best. Start with the early American Mercenary titles if you want the full rise from disgraced Ranger to hardened operator, or jump into the Shadow Strike era if modern CIA black ops and a hero juggling home life and global crises are what you are after. Either way, you are signing up for a long, connected journey with one character who never really gets to leave the war behind.
