Author bio

Jason Kasper spent fifteen years in the US Army before he ever thought of himself as a writer. He began as a young enlisted Ranger in 2001 and ended his career as a Green Beret captain and team commander.

As a kid he was drawn to stories of soldiers and far off places, and by the time he finished high school the military was the only path he wanted. He enlisted on a Ranger contract, went through basic and infantry training, and soon found himself in a very real war.

Serving with the 3rd Ranger Battalion, he deployed to Afghanistan in 2002 and took part in the invasion of Iraq the following year. After those tours he earned an appointment to West Point, where four demanding years of study turned him into an infantry officer instead of an enlisted soldier.

He joined the 82nd Airborne Division, added more time in Afghanistan, and eventually went through Special Forces Assessment and Selection. That led to the 3rd Special Forces Group, multiple deployments across Afghanistan and Africa, and the job he had always pictured, leading a small team on difficult missions far from home.

Off duty, he chased other kinds of risk.

Long distance runs turned into marathons and then ultramarathons. Skydiving became wingsuit flights and BASE jumps, the kind of pursuits that would later show up in his fiction when characters step to the edge of a ramp or a cliff and jump anyway.

At some point between deployments, he also started quietly turning those experiences into fiction.

Writing began as a private habit squeezed in between training cycles, a few pages drafted in a hooch or on a laptop at home. By the time he took terminal leave from the Army in 2016, he had a finished manuscript and a clear next step, publishing Greatest Enemy, the first David Rivers novel and the launch of his American Mercenary series. That book and its follow ups, including Offer of Revenge and Dark Redemption, follow a former Army Ranger who falls into the mercenary underworld and spends years chasing answers about a betrayal that destroyed his team.

With the later Shadow Strike novels, starting with The Night Stalker Rescue and The Enemies of My Country, he moves David into the world of covert CIA operations and a double life as a family man in rural Virginia. In parallel, his Spider Heist books beginning with The Spider Heist swap rifles and raids for high stakes robberies, while other work like Her Dark Silence leans into psychological suspense and the lingering effects of trauma.

Across all of these stories, readers tend to come for the pace and the action and stay for the way small teams work, argue, and depend on one another. The details of planning sessions, gear, and after action stress come from lived experience, but the focus is always on what that pressure does to people and the choices they make. He now lives in Cary, North Carolina, with his family and writes full time, still drawing on the same mix of discipline, curiosity, and risk that drove his years in uniform.
