Series background & context
Scales 'n' Spells begins with one big shared-world hook, dragons have been hidden for centuries, and now they are looking for the mage mates they thought were gone forever. That gives the series its instant energy. Every book comes with a new romantic pairing, but the larger world keeps building around dragon clans, rediscovered magic, and the complications that come with both.
The Burkhard fire dragons sit at the center of this branch of the story. They are powerful, secretive, territorial, and very sure that once they find their mate, that person is not getting away again. The mages, unsurprisingly, do not always agree with the speed or force of that plan.
So the fun is in the collision.
One book might begin with a young man stumbling into a dragon festival and learning his entire understanding of himself is wrong. Another sends a mage across Europe with a dragon scale and a wild plan. Later installments widen the cast and deepen the sense of clan life, until the romances feel inseparable from the magical politics surrounding them.
The tone stays lively even when the stakes rise. There are kidnappings, bad mages, hidden histories, and real danger, but there is also a lot of teasing, protective dragon behavior, and the sense that every new couple shifts the balance of the whole world.
If you want fated-mate fantasy romance with secret magic, dragon clans, and a shared-world structure that rewards reading in order, this is the place to start.
