Author bio

Honor Raconteur says she was born loving books. On her official site, she jokes that her mother read her fairy tales and her father read her technical manuals, which goes a long way toward explaining her work. Her books often mix wonder with systems, curiosity, and people who have to solve problems fast.

She started early.

At five, she wrote and illustrated her first book, and she has kept going ever since. That long habit shows up in the size and range of her catalog. She writes epic fantasy, secondary-world mysteries, portal fantasy, and other stories that like to test both their characters and their magic.

A lot of readers first meet her through the Advent Mage books. Jaunten, Magus, Advent, and Balancer build out a world where magic has nearly vanished and returning it comes with danger, prophecy, and politics. The connected Warlords books push that same setting into harsher territory, with desert conflict, power struggles, and younger mages forced into leadership before they are ready.

She also clearly enjoys high-concept fantasy with practical stakes. The Child Prince opens with a cursed prince and an artifactor who would really rather not deal with royal problems, then keeps widening the trouble from there. Deepwoods starts as a rescue mission and grows into guild politics, war, and found family. Imagineer begins with a teenager discovering that magic is real, then turns into a globe-spanning tangle of strange creatures and even stranger systems.

And then there is the mystery side.

The Case Files of Henri Davenforth has become one of her best-known projects for good reason. Those books pair magical examiner Henri Davenforth with Jamie Edwards, the feared Shinigami Detective, and let them work through murders, thefts, and magical crimes in a vividly built city. The setup gives Raconteur room for puzzle plotting, but also for character rhythm, professional friction, and the constant nuisance of magic behaving badly.

Across her work, certain patterns keep showing up. She likes capable people, unusual teams, magical rules that matter, and plots that reward paying attention. She also likes humor, sometimes dry, sometimes outright goofy, especially when her characters are tired, under pressure, or making one terrible choice after another for very understandable reasons.

She writes under more than one name as well, including AJ Sherwood, and her official sites point to still more pen names. The genres shift, but the energy is familiar. She seems drawn to strong group dynamics, oddball premises, and stories that move.

These days she lives in Michigan in an old Craftsman house with two dogs, three cats, and a fish. That feels fitting for a writer whose books are busy, a little chaotic, and very fond of the company they keep.
