Series background & context

Savage Land follows Hawley Cooper, a young man who goes into the Rocky Mountains looking for adventure and finds a life that demands much more than nerve. It is a mountain-man series about learning to trap, survive, love, grieve, and keep going in country that can kill the unprepared without warning.

In To Face a Savage Land, Hawley joins experienced trapper Josiah Weeks, expecting to learn the mountain trade. Instead, Weeks abandons him in the middle of winter with almost no food or weapons. Hawley survives a wolf attack and is taken in by Shoshone people, but survival does not erase what was done to him or the promise of vengeance he carries.

The mountains make every problem bigger.

The series follows Hawley as he becomes more capable and more deeply tied to the people around him. In To Face a Savage Winter, a Crow war party raids his camp and takes his Shoshoni wife, Black Moon Woman. Hawley sets out into the Bighorn Mountains as winter closes in, facing cold, hunger, distance, and the possibility that he may be too late.

To Face a Savage Mountain puts Hawley beside fellow trapper Zeke Potts and an unlikely ally as they confront Blackfeet warriors in a snowbound valley. The later books keep the focus on the emotional cost of a frontier life. To Face a Savage Time continues Hawley's struggle through another period of danger, while To Face a Savage Trail finds him shaken by loss and banishment, trying to confront the source of the darkness he fears is taking over his life.

This is a continuing story, not a group of interchangeable adventures. Hawley's relationships, his marriage, and his place among Indigenous communities develop across the books. The series does not make the fur trade seem easy or romantic. Food runs short. Horses are lost. Weather turns. A single attack can change everything.

The tone is harsh, personal, and action-heavy, with plenty of wilderness survival alongside armed conflict. Hawley is not born a finished hero. Readers see him learn through bad choices, pain, endurance, and the help of people who decide he is worth saving.

Start with To Face a Savage Land and read straight through. Each book adds another layer to Hawley's life, while the Rockies remain the one opponent nobody can truly defeat.
