Arizona Territory Books in Order

John Legg's Arizona Territory series follows Jack Guthrie through the rough settlements and open country of the Southwest. Guthrie is a former bounty hunter who becomes a marshal, but changing jobs does not make his life any quieter. The series brings him up against killers, corrupt local powers, old enemies, and towns where ordinary people need someone willing to stand beside them.

The books were published in a different order from the internal chronology, and that is part of the fun of a series guide. Trouble in Tall Pine works well as an entry point because it introduces Guthrie as a man trying to find a place in Arizona Territory. After a dangerous accident, he is helped by Chinese residents of Tall Pine, then finds himself caught in the town's prejudice and simmering hostility.

Guthrie is not a polished, distant hero. He is tough, stubborn, and protective of the people he considers his own. As the stories continue through Arizona Coffin, Apache Coffin, High Country Showdown, Guns of Apache Springs, and Guns of Arizona, he faces frontier problems that cannot always be solved by a quick draw.

Then the past comes calling again.

Guns of Justice finds Guthrie settled into his work as marshal of Bonito, Arizona Territory, with his wife Addie and their young son. A plea from a friend takes the family to Apache Springs in neighboring New Mexico Territory, where murder, intimidation, kidnapping, and a buried history have a whole town on edge.

The setting matters throughout. Arizona Territory is a place of long distances, isolated settlements, hard-earned businesses, and communities made up of people from very different backgrounds. Legg uses that landscape to give the series a steady feeling of unease. The law might be present, but it can be thin, compromised, or simply too far away.

These are straightforward frontier action stories with a continuing lead character, strong family ties, and plenty of moral pressure. Guthrie regularly has to decide how much he is willing to risk for a friend or a stranger. Readers who prefer chronological character development can begin with Trouble in Tall Pine. Those who want to sample the later family-and-lawman version of the series can start with Guns of Justice.
