Series background & context

The Samantha Granger Experiment is Kari Lee Townsend's middle-grade science-fiction adventure series. It follows Samantha Granger, an eighth grader who loves technology and has the latest gadgets thanks to her parents' work at an electronics company.

Then one strange encounter changes what technology means to her.

In Fused, Samantha comes into contact with an unusual crystal and becomes physically connected to her new cell phone. The result is both exciting and frightening. Sam can access phone functions in ways no one else can, using abilities that seem built into her body. She can communicate, track, and record in ways that make her feel less like an ordinary student and more like a secret experiment.

Sam still has ordinary concerns. She wants to see her friends, worry about her crush Trevor, and avoid making her life even more awkward. That balance is part of the series' appeal. The high-concept premise stays tied to a young teen who is trying to understand herself while adults and dangerous strangers begin paying attention.

The stakes rise quickly when Sam's abilities intercept emergencies and suggest that powerful people are interested in what happened to her. The stories mix gadgets, conspiracies, espionage, school life, and superhero-style action. Sam has to decide whom she can trust while learning that she may not be the only person changed by the forces behind the experiment.

Fearless continues Samantha's story as the dangers around her grow. The related Digital Diva books, Talk To The Hand and Rise of the Phenoteens, revisit the same heroine and her technology-based powers.

This is a fast-moving series for readers who enjoy teen heroes but want the hero to be a smart, uneasy girl rather than someone who begins the story feeling fearless.

Start with Fused. It introduces Sam, her transformation, the technology at the center of the story, and the bigger threat that carries into the next adventure.
