Roman Hearts Books in Order

Roman Hearts is Tanya Bird's three-book historical action romance series set against the violence, spectacle, and strict social rules of ancient Rome. Each novel centers on a different couple, but all three stories ask what love can look like when freedom, family, status, and war are never simple matters.

The series opens with A Gladiator's Oath. Mila is slaveborn and determined not to remain a slave, even if chasing freedom means entering the arena. Remus Latinius earned his own freedom through gladiatorial combat and now trains others rather than fighting himself. Their meeting brings together two people who understand the arena's cost, but want very different things from the future.

Freedom comes with a price.

In A Charioteer's Promise, the focus moves to Dulcia, who is half slave and half noble. Her family expects her to marry, while she is still grieving the absence of the father who has always remained just beyond reach. Nero grew up on Rome's streets and has quietly loved Dulcia for years. He wants to build a life that could be worthy of her, but an arranged match and the city's class divisions make that hope feel reckless.

The final book, A Legate's Pledge, takes the story north of Rome's borders. Brei is a warrior preparing to face an enormous Roman force and believes killing its leader may be the only way to protect her people. General Nerva Papias leads that army, though he no longer believes in the war he has been ordered to fight. When Brei becomes his captive, both have to reconsider the enemy they thought they understood.

The historical setting matters throughout, from the gladiator school and chariot racing culture to inherited status, military power, and Rome's expansion beyond its walls. These are not quiet drawing-room romances. The books put their couples in situations where physical danger and public expectations carry real consequences.

Expect action, family pressure, forbidden or difficult love, and heroines who push against the narrow roles assigned to them. The three novels can be enjoyed as separate romances, but reading A Gladiator's Oath, A Charioteer's Promise, and A Legate's Pledge in order gives the best sense of the connected world. Violence is part of the setting, particularly in scenes involving the arena and war.
