Series background & context

The Roman Arena stories are short, sharp novellas set in the early years of Emperor Claudius’s reign. They centre on Marcus Valerius Pavo, the son of a disgraced general who volunteers to fight as a gladiator in the hope of clearing his family’s name.

In Barbarian Pavo is given just a month to prepare for a duel with Britomaris, a savage Gaul who has already killed Rome’s best fighters. His trainer is Optio Macro, a familiar face from the Cato and Macro novels, here serving in an earlier phase of his career. Macro knows how unforgiving the arena can be and doubts that his new pupil will last long.

Challenger and First Sword see Pavo rise through the ranks of the gladiator school in Capua. He faces legendary veterans, brutal training schedules and the constant risk that rival fighters or political enemies will cut him down before he ever reaches the main games in Rome.

Behind the clashes of sword and shield runs a thread of conspiracy. The same web of imperial secretaries, ambitious nobles and hired killers that haunts the Eagles of the Empire books reaches into the arena, using popular gladiators as pawns in larger struggles.

By the time of Revenge and Champion, Pavo and Macro are entangled in a revolt that threatens to spill out of the amphitheatre and into the streets. Pavo’s need to confront the men responsible for his father’s death collides with Rome’s hunger for spectacle.

Read together – or in the collected volume Arena – the series gives a close‑up look at gladiator training and games, while also offering a sideways glance at key figures like Narcissus and the young Emperor Claudius. It’s a more intimate, compressed view of the same world that Macro and Cato march through with their legions.
