Author bio
Tanya Bird is an Australian romance author who writes historical, contemporary, and speculative love stories. She lives in Brisbane with her husband, three sons, a greyhound, and a whippet. Her public bio also makes room for horses, pancakes, satire, and a well-protected chocolate stash.
Her route to publishing was not especially tidy, which is probably reassuring to anyone with an unfinished draft tucked away somewhere. Bird studied professional communication at Monash University, then added qualifications in public relations, professional writing and editing, and copywriting.
Before publishing fiction, she spent six years working in media and advertising. She had begun writing novels earlier, but paid work had to come first. The writing itch did not go away, though, and she eventually returned to it.
Her debut novel, The Royal Companion, arrived in 2017 and introduced the invented kingdom of Syrasan. Its heroine, Aldara, is pulled into a royal system that treats women known as Companions as possessions, then finds herself drawn to Prince Tyron, a soldier carrying the weight of war. The book was shortlisted for the Woollahra Digital Literary Awards that year.
That was the start of a much bigger fictional world.
The six-book The Companion series mixes court politics, danger, and romances shaped by rigid rules around power, class, and loyalty. The first three books follow Aldara and Tyron's connected story, while later novels turn to people already moving around the edges of that kingdom, including Petra, Astra, Cora, and the men who challenge their assumptions about survival and freedom.
Bird has also taken her action romance into ancient Rome with the Roman Hearts novels. In A Gladiator's Oath, a young woman named Mila enters the arena in pursuit of freedom and meets former gladiator Remus Latinius. A Charioteer's Promise follows Dulcia and Nero as social position and an unwanted betrothal test a long-held love. A Legate's Pledge puts warrior Brei and Roman general Nerva Papias on opposing sides of a violent conflict.
Then there is Kingdom of Walls, a medieval dystopian romance series built around famine, guarded borders, merchants, and defenders. The stories follow the Suttone sisters as each faces a different part of a kingdom under strain. Defender of Hearts won a Romance Writers of Australia RUBY Award in 2022.
Bird's standalones show the same interest in people who are boxed in by family, duty, fear, or the lives others have mapped out for them. Breathing Water moves into paranormal romance, while Shards of You and Me is a contemporary small-town story about a forbidden relationship and a young woman beginning to question the faith community that has shaped her life.
The stakes are personal, even when kingdoms, wars, or old secrets are involved.
Bird is a member of Romance Writers of Australia and the Alliance of Independent Authors. She continues to write across several romance subgenres, often pairing emotionally pressured characters with worlds that make an easy escape impossible.
