Author bio
Rita Stradling writes young adult and new adult romance with magic, monsters, awkward choices, and people trying to find the person who makes sense of their messy lives.
Her books move comfortably between paranormal romance, fantasy, science fiction, and contemporary stories. A vampire might be trying to survive an elite school. A young woman may be caught between demons on a European trip. Or a grieving widow might decide that two weeks is enough time to start putting her life back together.
Art has been an important part of Stradling's path. She earned a degree in art history, with interests in modern and medieval art, and that background shows up in the places she builds. The Deception Dance, for example, begins with Raven Smith heading to Europe to enjoy art and spend time with her sister. The trip quickly becomes something much stranger, pulling Raven into a dangerous world of demons, old secrets, and impossible feelings.
She likes putting ordinary hopes inside very unusual circumstances.
The Dakota Kekoa books take that approach into a world where dragon-blooded dracons hold power. Dakota is a teenage henchgirl with family pressure, a dangerous job, and no shortage of reasons to mistrust the people around her. In Henchgirl and Rex, romance and mystery run alongside conflicts between humans and dracons.
Stradling also writes stories without supernatural creatures at the center. The Fourteen Day Soul Detox follows Jamie Scott, a widow who makes a practical, emotional list for moving forward after loss. Making Bad Choices, later republished as One Forbidden Kiss, is a small-town romance about Cassie, grief, a new home, and feelings she knows could cause trouble.
Then there is Ensnared, a futuristic take on Beauty and the Beast. It combines artificial intelligence, a secluded tower, and two people carrying more fear than they first admit. Colorless heads in another direction again, following Annabelle Klein after her parents' deaths leave her invisible and forgotten in a society ruled by magicians.
Her later paranormal stories return to hidden worlds and high-stakes relationships. The Vampire Legacy begins with Midnight Secrets, in which January Moore wakes up as a vampire and is offered a chance to enter the secretive Blackburn Academy. In the Grayhaven books, written with Alexa B. James, Teagan finds refuge in a supernatural town while trying to outrun the people who once controlled her.
Love is usually part of the problem, and part of the way through it.
Stradling lives in Humboldt County on California's North Coast with her husband, son, and dog. She has described a life filled with hiking, rafting, coastal drives, redwoods, and plenty of popcorn. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she returned to school to explore dark fantasy and horror, earning an MFA in Writing from California College of the Arts in 2022. Alongside fiction, she has also worked as an editor, a fitting role for someone who says she finds correcting grammar oddly relaxing.
