Domengrad is ruled by rules that are both religious and political. The people are taught to fear the gods, obey the magicians, and reject the Iconoclasts, figures treated as dangerous heretics from the past. Annabelle had considered those old stories distant myths. Her transformation makes them feel much more immediate.

The heart of the story is Annabelle's attempt to find out what happened to her parents and why she has changed. Becoming unseen gives her a strange kind of freedom, but it also makes her vulnerable.
