Series background & context
Colorless is a dark fantasy built around a simple, frightening change. Sixteen-year-old Annabelle Klein learns that her parents have died, and then all the pigment drains from her body. Almost immediately, the people who once knew her stop seeing and remembering her.
Annabelle is still there. The rest of the world simply acts as if she is not.
Her home in Domengrad should have been the one place where she was safe. Instead, it becomes part of the mystery. Annabelle is the heir to a manor burdened by debt, and she had already been expected to marry a cousin she does not want. After she becomes colorless, the situation grows worse when powerful monks move into the estate and take control.
Domengrad is ruled by rules that are both religious and political. The people are taught to fear the gods, obey the magicians, and reject the Iconoclasts, figures treated as dangerous heretics from the past. Annabelle had considered those old stories distant myths. Her transformation makes them feel much more immediate.
The heart of the story is Annabelle's attempt to find out what happened to her parents and why she has changed. Becoming unseen gives her a strange kind of freedom, but it also makes her vulnerable. She cannot easily ask for help, defend herself, or know who is telling the truth. The few people who can still notice her become important, though trust is never simple in a world full of secret motives.
The series mixes mystery with a gaslamp-style fantasy setting. There are magicians, monks with a shared consciousness, old beliefs, family secrets, and the looming threat of dire wolves. The danger is not just personal. Annabelle's condition puts her in the middle of a conflict that reaches beyond her household and touches the power structure of all Domengrad.
It is a story about identity as much as magic. Annabelle has to keep hold of who she is while the world insists she has disappeared. Her anger, fear, and stubbornness matter because nobody else can solve the problem for her.
Start with Colorless. It introduces Annabelle's world, the mystery of the Iconoclasts, and the consequences of being forgotten by everyone around you.
