Series background & context

The Dakota Kekoa series is a young adult fantasy set in a world where the descendants of dragons and humans, known as dracons, hold enormous power. Governments, wealth, and social status all tilt toward the dragon-blooded. Humans live beside them, but not on equal terms.

Dakota Kekoa knows how hard that world can be.

She is a teenage henchgirl, a soldier working for her powerful dracon grandfather. Dakota has a rare ability to influence emotions, which makes her useful in the family business and puts her in situations where she has to read people quickly. She also has responsibilities at home, a difficult mother, sisters to look after, and a past marked by the murder of her father.

The first book, Henchgirl, places Dakota on Mabi, an island where tension between humans and dracons is already close to breaking point. Her work sends her into a human-only school protected from dracon influence. It is meant to be an assignment, but the line between a job and a personal life soon gets complicated.

When girls begin disappearing, Dakota is drawn into an investigation that exposes wider dangers in her community. She must deal with her grandfather's demands, the people she cares about, and the possibility that the official story about what is happening is not the whole truth. The mystery gives the series a steady sense of urgency, while the political conflict keeps raising the stakes.

Romance is part of the pressure, too. Dakota's connection with Vern Manderson, a dracon noble, is difficult from the start. They come from unequal worlds, neither is especially good at backing down, and both have reasons to question the other's loyalties. The relationship develops alongside Dakota's larger struggle to decide what she owes her family and what she owes herself.

This is a series for readers who like urban fantasy with dragons in modern settings, family drama, and a heroine who is capable but still figuring things out. Dakota is not a chosen-one figure who has everything under control. She is young, stressed, and often forced to make choices before she has all the information.

Start with Henchgirl, then continue with Rex. Reading in order matters because Dakota's relationships, the missing-girls mystery, and the conflict between humans and dracons build from the opening book.
