Rise of the Empress Books in Order

The Rise of the Empress books take place in Feng Lu, a fantasy empire shaped by East Asian history, folklore, and fairy-tale ideas. The central story begins with Forest of a Thousand Lanterns, which turns the familiar Evil Queen setup inside out. Instead of meeting a villain from the outside, readers follow Xifeng as she decides who she is willing to become.

Xifeng starts as a young woman from a remote village with a prophecy hanging over her. She has been told that she is meant for greatness, and the possibility of becoming empress feels like a way out of fear and powerlessness. But the road to the palace asks more and more of her. Dark magic, court intrigue, dangerous bargains, and the lure of control all test the line between fate and choice.

This is not a story where ambition stays neat and noble.

The first book is driven by Xifeng’s rise and the uneasy question of whether she can claim power without losing herself. Feng Lu matters as much as any one character. Its palace is full of rivalries and secrets, while the wider empire is tied to old gods, legends, and a struggle between the Dragon Lord and the Serpent God. The magic can be grim, and the stakes are personal as well as political.

Kingdom of the Blazing Phoenix changes the view. Princess Jade has spent years in hiding while Xifeng rules as empress, and she becomes the figure who may be able to challenge that rule. Jade does not simply want a crown, but she knows the empire is suffering and that someone must act. Her journey brings together loyalty, resistance, mythic quests, and the worry that power might change her too.

The companion novel Song of the Crimson Flower stays in the same world but tells a more intimate story. Lan and Bao are bound up in a witch’s curse, then drawn into wider events involving Jade and Commander Wei. It adds romance, travel, and another look at the costs of magic without requiring readers to leave Feng Lu behind.

At its heart, the series is about what people do with the futures handed to them. Expect palace politics, uneasy alliances, old legends, and characters who have to live with the choices they make.
