Richard and Rose Books in Order

Richard and Rose is the series many Lynne Connolly readers start with, and it is easy to see why. Set in the mid eighteenth century, it begins with a meeting, falls quickly into love, and then keeps going long after most romance novels would stop. That last part is the real hook. Richard and Rose do not simply get together and disappear into an ending. They marry, travel, investigate, argue, protect each other, and keep building a life.

That gives the whole series a satisfying shape.

Richard Kerre, Lord Strang, is not just a grand Georgian hero with money and style. He also has a past that keeps reaching forward into the present. His connection to Thompson's, a staffing agency that doubles as a spy network and private force, means trouble is rarely far away. Rose Golightly begins as the quieter half of the pair, but Connolly never leaves her there. She grows into the partnership and insists on having her own agency, even when Richard would rather wrap her in protection.

The books move through country houses, coastal smuggling country, London streets, and eventually farther afield. Murder, sabotage, blackmail, family enemies, and political intrigue all feed into the romance. Each installment has its own mystery, but the bigger pleasure is watching the couple change together. Richard's intensity only works because Rose learns how to stand up to it. Rose's decency only works because she is not naive.

There is also a lot of pleasure in the supporting cast. Siblings, old enemies, servants, children, and recurring allies help make the world feel lived in. Connolly likes social texture, and this series gives her plenty of room for it. You get dresses and carriages, yes, but also illness, inheritance problems, criminal schemes, and the daily strain of living with reputation.

If you like historical romance with a continuing couple, or mysteries with a strong love story running through them, Richard and Rose is probably the clearest example of what Connolly does best. It is adventurous, emotional, and very comfortable letting marriage be the beginning instead of the finish line.
