Series background & context

The Brazen Burrells is a later historical trilogy from Lynne Connolly, and it has a strong family hook from the start. Three sisters arrive in London and shake up the ton almost by accident. They are beautiful, resourceful, and not nearly as secure as polite society assumes. That gap between appearance and reality gives the books much of their energy.

They do not drift quietly into place.

The first novel follows Viola, who is swept into high society and into conflict with Gerald, Earl of Knowsley. The second turns to Juliet, whose attraction to the wrong man creates exactly the kind of trouble her family can least afford. The third book, Bianca's story, raises the stakes again with house party scandal, murder, and a heroine trying to rebuild a badly damaged reputation.

One of the pleasures of the series is that the sisters feel distinct. They are connected by loyalty and circumstance, but each book takes a different emotional route. Viola's story is full of uncertainty and self doubt under outward beauty. Juliet's has more active social complication. Bianca's is touched by what the earlier books have already done to her life, so the trilogy gains momentum as it goes.

Connolly also uses this series to talk a little more directly about class and public image. The Burrells are navigating a world that likes to sort women quickly and then hold them to the label. A whisper can do real damage. A bad marriage can echo for years. Yet the books never feel grim. There is too much wit, attraction, and family determination for that.

If you like historical romance with sisters at the center, social upheaval, and a good balance of tenderness and trouble, this series is easy to recommend. It has a lively start, a strong family spine, and enough scandal to keep every drawing room scene interesting.
