Series background & context

The Daring Dersinghams is one of Lynne Connolly's most inviting historical series. The hook is simple and strong, a newly titled earl, Gerald Dersingham, and his three sisters, all trying to find their footing after an inheritance changes everything. The sisters are triplets, and each has interests that make her stand out well beyond the marriage mart.

That is where the fun starts.

Connolly builds the series around smart women with real passions. One book turns on silverwork and the business world of London. Another leans into astronomy and scientific ambition. Another brings botany and gardens into the center of the romance. The family setup gives the books warmth, but the heroines' work and curiosity give them their real shape.

Gerald's problem is that rank comes with obligations, and he takes those obligations seriously. He wants his sisters to have the chances they deserve, even if that means making choices that do not suit his own heart. Around him, the women in the family are trying to claim room for themselves in a world that would prefer them decorative, quiet, and easy to place.

So these are romance novels, yes, but they are also books about talent and self determination. Connolly is especially good at showing how class, money, and reputation can trap people from different angles. A silversmith widow and an earl are not playing the same game. Neither are a woman with scientific ability and the men who control access to recognition.

The tone is warmer than some of her darker Georgian series, but there is still tension, theft, blackmail, and the usual Connolly sense that private feeling is always tangled up with public risk. The family scenes matter a lot here. The Dersinghams argue, protect one another, misjudge one another, and keep going.

If you like historical romance with clever heroines, unusual interests, and a family thread that links the books together, this is a very easy series to settle into.
