It is a playful premise, but the stakes are real.

The books lean into the idea that divine power does not make anyone wiser in love. If anything, it makes matters worse. Pride lasts longer. Rivalries run deeper. Attraction gets tangled up with destiny, hierarchy, and old quarrels that have been simmering for ages. Connolly uses that to give the romances a larger scale while still keeping the emotional beats personal.

One of the pleasures of the series is the contrast between the grand mythic setup and the very human awkwardness of falling in love. Eros can still make a mess of things. A dangerous enchantment can still leave two people having to decide whether they trust each other. A war god can still discover that battle is easier than intimacy. The divine element widens the world, but it does not replace the romance.

The Georgian setting matters, too. These are not fantasy books floating in an empty historical backdrop. Titles, estates, social rules, and reputation all still have weight. Connolly likes the friction that creates. Immortal beings may have powers, but they still have to navigate drawing rooms, marriages, and family expectations.

Readers should expect a series with linked characters and an ongoing sense of shared world, rather than six entirely disconnected books. Divine politics carry from one story to the next. So do alliances, resentments, and bits of family history. That gives the later books extra payoff.

If you like historical romance but want something stranger and more mischievous, this series hits a sweet spot. It keeps the gowns, carriages, and social tension, then hands the whole lot to gods who are just as vulnerable to jealousy, longing, and bad decisions as anyone else.
