Revenge Squad takes the Human Legion universe and drags it into the alleys. Instead of campaigns, admirals, or galactic strategy, these books stay close to street-level trouble on the frontier planet Klin-Tula, especially in the city of Port Zahir. NJ's friends and sidekicks are not exactly normal either, which is part of the fun. Tim C Taylor describes the books as an urban fantasy and space opera crossover, and that hybrid label fits. You get frontier science fiction texture, but also a crew dynamic built around hidden talents, nasty surprises, and enemies who feel a little closer to monster fiction than straight military opposition.

That makes the tone rougher and more mischievous. Hurt U Back is designed as the easy jump-in point, basically NJ's first awful day in Port Zahir. Second Strike takes the same pressure and turns it nastier once he angers somebody too powerful to ignore. The books move quickly, joke darkly, and keep one boot planted in the kind of revenge fantasy that only works when things keep getting worse before they get better.
