Reality War Books in Order

The Reality War is the oddball corner of Tim C Taylor's bibliography, and that is exactly why it is worth knowing about. These books share a universe with the later Human Legion stories, but they do not read like stripped-down military SF prototypes. They are stranger, smaller, and more interested in time, identity, and moral direction than in chain of command or battlefield hierarchy.

Tim himself has described the pair as time travel shenanigans, and that is a fair starting point. The series uses the machinery of science fiction to play with alternate realities, broken chronology, and the slippery question of what history even is when different versions of it keep pressing against one another. On top of that, the books are built as a science fictional re-imagining of The Pilgrim's Progress, which gives them a more allegorical undertone than the rest of his fiction.

That sounds heavier than the books actually feel.

The important thing is atmosphere. The Slough of Despond and The City of Destruction have a dreamlike, unstable quality. Reality bends. Redemption matters. Strange futures do not stay neatly in the future. Taylor has also linked the line to jurassic adventure and dystopian alternate reality, which gives you a good sense of its willingness to move around. This is not one clean high-concept puzzle box. It is more like a restless, early universe experiment that already shows his interest in pressure, consequence, and people trapped inside systems bigger than themselves.

There is a useful bit of background around the edges too. Welcome Home, Jannisary began as an exercise in dramatized worldbuilding for these novels, which helps explain why the wider Human Legion setting already feels larger than any one story. Even when The Reality War is doing its own thing, it is nudging pieces into place for later work.
