Proper Family Books in Order

The Proper Family books, sometimes listed as the Benson family novels, are built around one big, talkative, occasionally impossible clan. The series begins with A Proper Family Holiday, when Chelsea Benson is dragged off on a family trip she does not want, and it quickly becomes clear that the real setting is not just Lanzarote, a cruise ship, or a Christmas wedding. It is the pressure cooker of family life, where old grudges, private hopes and badly timed announcements all come out at once.

Chelsea is often the reader's way in, but the books are much wider than one woman's love life. Ronnie, Mark, the children, the parents, Granddad Bill, and later Adam, Lily and the rest of the expanding circle all get room to matter. That is part of the fun. The Bensons never feel like background furniture waiting for the main couple to finish kissing. They bicker, interfere, keep secrets, give terrible advice and, when it counts, turn up for one another.

And the series keeps widening. A Proper Family Christmas pulls a long-hidden family story into the open when a daughter given up for adoption becomes part of the Benson orbit. A Proper Family Adventure sends everybody off on a cruise, which is exactly the wrong place for people who need space. A Wedding at Christmas shifts into full family event mode, with wedding plans, in-laws, step-parent nerves and all the stress that comes when a private promise becomes a public production. The shorter pieces, Falling Leaves and Fireworks and Top of the Naughty List, stay with the same household and show how much drama Manby can wring from Halloween, school-age mischief and one wobbling festive season.

Nobody in this family gets to stay private for long.

What links the books is not one giant cliffhanger. It is the way ordinary life keeps forcing these characters back together. Holidays, weddings, illnesses, money worries, grief, jealousy, parenting and new relationships all raise the emotional temperature. The stakes are recognisable rather than melodramatic. Who feels left out. Who gets forgiven. Who is trying too hard to look fine. Who is brave enough to admit that they need help. Those are the questions that give the series its pull.

The tone is warm, funny and a little sharp around the edges. Manby is very good at writing the kind of family scenes where people talk over one another, say the wrong thing, then somehow circle back to tenderness. There is romance here, of course, but the real ongoing love story is between relatives who know each other too well and keep choosing each other anyway. If you like ensemble fiction, domestic comedy and family sagas that stay grounded even at their busiest, this series has a lot to enjoy.
