Author bio
Chrissie Manby grew up in Gloucester, in the west of England, and has said she was much better at English than sport. That early tilt toward stories stayed with her. Long before she became known for romantic comedies, she was already the girl sending her work out and hoping somebody would say yes.
Writing came early.
At fourteen she had a short story published in Just Seventeen, using the pen name Carolyn Lane. She kept writing for the magazine while studying Experimental Psychology at St Edmund Hall, Oxford. Those early commissions did more than bring in a bit of money, they gave her proof that words could become a working life.
After university, she expected something steadier. Instead, a lower degree result knocked her off the sensible path and into a string of London temp jobs. One of them was at Prelude Audio Books, where a chance meeting with novelist David Garnett pushed her to write a full-length manuscript. That manuscript became Inspiration, an erotic novella set among artists in St Ives, published under the name Stephanie Ash. More books followed under that name, and later under Olivia Darling and Stella Knightley too.
Then came the name most readers know.
As Chris Manby, and later as Chrissie Manby, she found her stride in smart, funny novels about love, money, work and the lies people tell themselves. Books such as Flatmates, Lizzie Jordan's Secret Life and Running Away from Richard put young women in awkward, very human situations and let the comedy come from panic, pride and bad decisions. Several of her novels, including Running Away from Richard, Seven Sunny Days and The Matchbreaker, became Sunday Times bestsellers.
What readers often like about her books is that the setups are playful, but the people do not feel flimsy. In A Proper Family Holiday and its sequels, she turns one loud family into a full comic world of grudges, secrets and reluctant loyalty. In the Newbay books, including A Fairy Tale for Christmas, The Worst Case Scenario Cookery Club and Once in a Lifetime, she shifts toward a softer small-town feel, with seaside settings, second chances and characters at very different ages trying to start over.
She has also worked as a screenwriter, written features and obituaries for national papers and magazines, and helped edit the Girls' Night In anthologies with Jessica Adams in aid of War Child. In more recent years she has taught creative writing too, which makes sense for someone who plans stories so carefully.
Manby lives in London, enjoys drawing and creating book covers, and has said she is learning German. In 2024 she introduced another name, CJ Wray, for The Excitements, a comic mystery with a different flavour from her romantic comedies. That shift says a lot about her career as a whole. She likes warmth, wit and a good setup, but she also likes trying something new.
