The Newbay books are set in a small seaside town where people keep crossing paths, hearing each other's news and getting gently pulled into one another's lives. Rather than following one couple from book to book, the series works more like a shared world. Each novel has its own central cast and romance, but the town itself is the thing that stays constant. Shops, local groups, family businesses and familiar faces give the books their shape.

That means Newbay feels lived in. In A Fairy Tale for Christmas, the local theatre society is in panto mode and the town's amateur dramatics scene becomes a perfect stage for crushes, rivalries and behind-the-scenes chaos. In The Worst Case Scenario Cookery Club, the action moves to a beginner's class where people sign up for very different reasons and discover that burnt dinners can lead to real friendship. The details change, but the pattern is the same. Newbay gives people a place to start again without pretending life has suddenly become easy.

The characters are usually adults who have been knocked off course a bit. Liz is dealing with a husband who has left. John is learning how to live after loss. Bella is overworked and badly in need of a life outside the office. Then Once in a Lifetime opens things out even further, bringing in Dani Parker, her teenage daughter Flossie and Dani's widowed mother Jane. That book shows one of the nicest things about this mini-series. Romance matters, but it is never only about the couple. Parents, children, neighbours, old flames and new friends all shape the emotional weather.

Newbay is small, but it is not tiny in feeling.

The town has a cozy atmosphere without becoming sugary. There are dogs, cakes, rehearsal rooms, hotel jobs, pet-shop visits and sea air, but there are also breakups, money worries, loneliness, awkward reunions and the fear that you may have already missed your chance. Manby writes these problems in a light way, yet she does not brush them off. Her characters are funny because they are flustered, hopeful and sometimes a bit stubborn, not because the books are laughing at them.

The setting matters more than it might first seem. Seaside towns are full of arrivals and departures, and Newbay uses that nicely. People come back. People get stuck. People think a new start will be simple, then realise they still have to carry themselves with them. The community keeps nudging them toward honesty. Join the play. Take the class. Go for the walk. Speak to the person you have been avoiding.

If you want linked stories with a friendly ensemble feel, this series is easy to settle into. You can read the books on their own, but reading them in order lets you watch Newbay grow from a festive theatre backdrop into a fuller world of neighbours, relatives and second chances.
