Author bio

Pam Howes was born in Cheshire, and her fiction has long carried the feel of North West England, from close-knit streets to the buzz of local music scenes. She worked for years in soft furnishings and interior design before writing became the work she wanted to pursue seriously.

Music was there from the start.

As a teenager, Howes worked in a local record shop and spent time around the musicians who came through it. That experience gave her a front-row view of young bands, big dreams and the messy personal lives that can sit behind a song. It also supplied the spark for her first novel.

That novel became Three Steps To Heaven, the opening story about the fictional rock band The Raiders. Set against the energy of the 1960s, it follows musicians and the people who love them as ambition, parenthood and old loyalties collide. Howes later returned to those characters in I Kissed You, Always on My Mind, Not Fade Away and That'll Be The Day, letting the story stretch across decades rather than leaving everyone frozen in their first burst of youth.

She has described the fictional town of Pickford, where those early books are set, as being based on Stockport. That local grounding matters. Even when the characters are chasing record deals, touring, or trying to outrun a family secret, their lives still involve parents, children, work, money and the people next door.

Howes's later historical sagas moved the focus to Liverpool. The Mersey novels begin with Dora Evans in the difficult years after the Second World War, while the Lark Lane books follow Alice and her daughter Cathy from wartime factory work into the uncertain decades that follow. In the Bryant Sisters novels, music again takes center stage, this time through a Liverpool singing trio whose friendships and families are tested by war and its aftermath.

Family is always part of the pressure.

Her books tend to put ordinary women at the heart of big changes. A young woman may be forced to choose between love and security. A mother may have to protect a child with too little money, too little help, and no easy answer. Friends turn up for one another, but they can also carry old hurts for years. The stories make room for romance and music, while staying interested in what happens after the exciting moment has passed.

Fast Movin' Train took Howes into a more contemporary setting, following an interior designer whose apparently settled family life is shaken by a phone call and an unexpected affair. It shows another side of her work: domestic lives that look stable from the outside, but are far more complicated up close.

Howes is a retired interior designer, a mother of three adult daughters and grandmother to seven grandchildren. She has also been a roadie for her musician partner, which feels fitting for a writer whose characters so often have guitars, record shops, dance halls and songs somewhere in their past.

She may write about hard choices, but she keeps returning to the people who have to live with them.
