The Mersey series, also known as the Mersey Trilogy, follows one Liverpool family across two decades of change. It begins just after the Second World War, when Dora Evans is trying to make a future with Joe Rodgers. Dora dreams of opening a dressmaking business and building a stable home, but grief, betrayal and money worries soon pull the family in different directions.

In The Lost Daughter of Liverpool, Dora's marriage is tested after a devastating loss and a fire changes the course of her life. The novel sets the pattern for the series: personal troubles unfold against a Liverpool still recovering from war, and every decision has consequences for the next generation. Dora is determined, but she is not protected from bad luck or from the damage people can do to one another.

The Forgotten Family of Liverpool moves into 1951, when the city is beginning to feel the end of rationing and the possibility of a new start. Dora is raising her daughters, Carol and Jackie, while trying to recover from the breakdown of her relationship with Joe. When a welfare officer takes Carol away to live with him, Dora has to fight for her family while coping with fresh crises of her own.

The final book, The Liverpool Girls, jumps forward to the 1960s and puts Carol and Jackie at the center. They are growing up in a different Liverpool, with department-store jobs, dreams of drama school and the pressure to make lives that are not defined by their parents' mistakes. But their shared past still has a powerful pull, especially when an unexpected pregnancy and a betrayal threaten their bond.

The family is messy, loving and often divided.

Dora's story is the spine of the trilogy, but the books are interested in every generation. Joe's choices, the presence of his second wife Ivy, and the sisters' changing relationships all show how old wounds keep resurfacing. At the same time, the novels make room for the small joys that keep people going: work they care about, ambitions that feel possible, and relatives who show up when they are needed.

Liverpool is more than scenery here. The series moves from the austerity of the postwar years to the energy of the 1960s, using changes in work, fashion and expectations to show how much has shifted around the family. The tone is dramatic and emotional, with a strong focus on women trying to claim a little security and happiness.
