Lark Lane Books in Order

The Lark Lane series is a Liverpool family saga that begins during the Second World War and follows its characters well beyond the end of fighting. It starts with Alice Turner and her best friend Millie Markham, who work at the Rootes munitions factory in 1940. They make aircraft parts and shell caps while air-raid sirens, rationing and bad news from the front shape every day.

Alice wants a life with her sweetheart, Terry. War has other ideas.

The first book, The Factory Girls of Lark Lane, establishes the things that matter most throughout the series: friendship, family responsibility and the stubborn effort to keep hope alive when life becomes frightening. Alice and Millie are young women doing demanding work, worrying about the men they love, and trying to support their families through losses they cannot control.

By The Shop Girls of Lark Lane, the war is ending, but Liverpool has not magically recovered. Alice and Terry are raising their daughter Cathy, while bomb damage and rationing remain part of the city's landscape. Alice works in the haberdashery department at Lewis's, and the series pays attention to the practical business of beginning again, finding work, paying bills and raising children after years of upheaval.

Cathy gradually becomes the focus of the later books. She dreams of nursing, but money problems and family pressure threaten to close that route before it begins. In The Nurses of Lark Lane, her determination to train as a cadet nurse creates strain at home and tests her relationship with Gianni. Cathy is not handed an easy future. She has to keep choosing it.

Then the story turns toward midwifery and a home for unmarried mothers.

The Midwives of Lark Lane follows Cathy as she tries to honour her grandmother's legacy while confronting danger from her own past. This final installment has more suspense than the earlier books, but it remains rooted in the relationships that have grown across the series. Alice, Cathy, Gianni and their wider circle have learned that family can be a source of pain, but also a place to find help when it counts.

These are emotional, character-led books rather than military adventures. Liverpool matters because it is a city rebuilding itself alongside the people in it. Factories, department stores, hospitals and homes all become places where the characters make difficult choices.

Read the books in order. Alice's early story gives Cathy’s later struggles their full weight, and each novel checks back in with the people who have made Lark Lane feel like home.
