The Bryant Sisters Books in Order

The Bryant Sisters series follows a Liverpool community from the first years of the Second World War into the 1950s. At its heart is Bella Rogers, later Bella Harrison, a young woman whose plans for love and music are repeatedly disrupted by war, loss and family secrets. The books begin in 1939, when ordinary life is about to be turned upside down, then stay with Bella and the people around her as they try to build something lasting from the damage.

Music gives the series its extra lift.

Bella performs with Edie and Fran as the Bryant Sisters, a singing trio whose songs bring a little comfort and escape during grim times. Their performances matter because they are part of how the women hold on to themselves. The trio is not simply a backdrop. Their friendship, shared history and changing ambitions help carry the story through each new stage of life.

Victory Street is the other main character. It is a working-class Liverpool street shaped by air raids, shortages and the absence of men sent away to fight. Neighbours know one another's business, for better and worse. When tragedy strikes, people step in with food, childcare, a listening ear or a hard truth. The street changes over the years, but the sense of community remains central.

Bella's relationship with her childhood love Bobby provides one important thread, although the books do not treat love as a simple reward at the end of hardship. The series makes room for the complications that come with grief, disability, prejudice, parenthood and the return of people from the past. Bella's son Levi, whose father is a Black American pilot, brings another layer to the family's experience of postwar Liverpool.

The war ends, but the problems do not vanish with it.

Later books move into 1946, 1952 and 1956, when Liverpool is rebuilding but still bears visible and emotional scars. The younger generation begins to make choices of its own, whether that means pursuing nursing, music or a different future from the one their parents expected. Family tensions and personal ambitions become as important as the old wartime dangers.

The tone is warm but never entirely cozy. There are painful turns, secrets and setbacks, yet the series is grounded in people trying to help one another carry on. Readers who enjoy historical family sagas with recurring characters, neighborhood life and plenty of music will find a story that develops steadily from book to book.
