Series background & context

Only When is Nicola Jane stepping into younger territory without losing the emotional intensity that runs through the rest of her work. This is a two-part story about first love, first betrayal, and how hard it is to move on from someone who hurt you before either of you really knew how to handle love properly.

The series begins with Emmie Carter, a quiet girl who mostly flies under the radar, and Kai Banks, the school golden boy who seems much softer in private messages than he does in person. An anonymous texting connection pulls them together, and then life complicates things fast when their families start crossing paths in real life.

That setup gives the books a nice split between hope and dread. Readers get the thrill of secret intimacy, but also the slow sense that reality is going to hit hard. Nicola Jane lets that betrayal land, and the second book, Only When We Fall, picks up months later when Emmie is trying to start over at university and Kai comes back into her orbit a changed boy, or at least one who wants to be.

These books feel more tender than Nicola Jane's biker titles, but they are not lightweight. They are about emotional scars, apology, memory, and whether second chances are brave or foolish. The college setting in the second half helps the story grow with the characters, moving it from school-age confusion into something a little more adult without losing the ache of that first heartbreak.

If you want Nicola Jane without the clubhouses and crime, Only When is one of the easiest places to go. The tension is personal, not violent. The stakes are emotional, not territorial. But the feelings are still big, and that is what makes it feel like her.

It is her softer lane, not her smaller one.
