North Country Books in Order

North Country is Wegert's newer Thousand Islands series, and it feels different from the Shana Merchant books right away. It is still crime fiction, still rooted in northern New York, and still interested in what people hide from one another. But it seems broader and more place-driven, less centered on one haunted lead and more interested in the weak spots inside a whole community. The questions are bigger than who did it.

The opening novel, In the Bones, starts with a deeply unsettling setup. Former hockey star Mikko Helle arrives in Cape Vincent to claim an extravagant waterfront house after a massive renovation. Nicole Durham, a local mother who badly needs work and has private reasons for wanting access to the property, gets hired as his cleaner. Then she realizes someone may already be living inside the mansion. When investigator Tim Wellington is pulled in, the story widens from creepy house tension to a much larger mystery after human remains are found in the basement.

That shift is the key to the series.

North Country does not feel built around a single viewpoint. Tim Wellington looks like the main thread, but the books also pay close attention to civilians whose lives are tangled up in the crime. In In the Bones, Nicole is just as important to the tension as the police are. That gives the series a nice mix of procedural structure and neighborhood suspense. You get the official investigation, but you also get the gossip, class resentment, family strain, and private panic that law enforcement only sees from the outside.

The setting matters just as much as the cast. Cape Vincent and the surrounding Thousand Islands region sit at the edge of the U.S.-Canada border, where tourism, money, isolation, and local history all rub against each other. Summer people and year-round residents do not always want the same things. Wealth can arrive suddenly. Old grudges can last forever. Wegert uses that friction well, so the danger in these books is not only about one violent act. It is also about the systems, blind spots, and bargains that let trouble grow until someone finally has to face it.

These books are moody, but they are not slow.

If In the Bones is the template, expect layered mysteries, strong atmosphere, and crimes that expose how a town really works once its polished surface cracks. The tone is tense and grounded, with enough investigative detail to satisfy mystery readers and enough personal drama to keep the stakes close. North Country is the one to pick up if you want suspicious houses, hidden lives, and a colder, wider look at the Thousand Islands world Wegert has been building.
