Across The Dead Season, The Kind to Kill, and Devils at the Door, the series keeps widening its view of the region. One book pulls Shana back into old family secrets in Vermont. Another shows how quickly a tourist town can turn on the investigator at the center of a scandal. Another brings trouble right into her home. The through line is that no case stays comfortably professional for long.

These are puzzle mysteries, but they are also recovery stories.

If you like crime novels that balance procedure with atmosphere, this series is easy to sink into. The books move fast, but they still make room for fallout, trust issues, community pressure, and the fact that survival does not automatically bring peace.
