Author bio
Tessa Afshar began her life in Iran, born into a nominally Muslim family where the air was filled with the lyrical sounds of Farsi and the tart sweetness of pomegranates. It was a world of rich history and family tradition, but her childhood took a sharp turn when she was fourteen years old. following her parents' divorce, she moved to England to attend a boarding school for girls.
Suddenly, she found herself navigating a completely different world. She had to learn a new language, adjust to a new culture, and find her place in a strange environment far from home. During this time of transition, she discovered a deep love for English literature. She fell for the classic novels of Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte, finding comfort in their stories. She even admits to a bit of teenage rebellion during the school’s required church services, where she would sit in the pews and secretly read romance paperbacks while pretending to listen to the sermon.
In her twenties, Tessa moved to the United States, a decision that would eventually lead to the most significant turning point of her life. It was here that she converted to Christianity, a choice that fundamentally reshaped her identity and her future. This newfound faith didn't just change her Sunday mornings; it changed the entire trajectory of her career.
She went on to earn a Master of Divinity from Yale University, where she served as co-chair of the Evangelical Fellowship. But she didn't start writing novels immediately. Instead, she spent nearly twenty years working in women’s and prayer ministry. This season of serving others gave her a front-row seat to the struggles, heartbreaks, and hopes of real people—experiences that would later fuel the emotional depth of her characters.
When she finally turned her focus to writing, she chose to retell the stories of biblical women. She wanted to explore the lives of figures who, like her, had faced immense challenges and found redemption.
Her debut novel, Pearl in the Sand, brings the story of Rahab to life, exploring how a woman with a difficult past finds her place in the lineage of faith. In In the Field of Grace, she reimagines the story of Ruth, a foreigner who leaves everything behind for a new land—a journey Tessa knows well. She also gives a voice to unnamed characters, such as in Land of Silence, where she weaves a narrative around the woman with the issue of blood, giving her a name, Elianna, and a heart-wrenching backstory.
Readers love her work not just for the careful historical detail, but for the way she blends that history with redemptive romance and genuine emotion. Her stories remind us that no matter how broken our past, there is always hope for a new beginning.
Today, Tessa lives in New England. When she isn’t writing, she tries her hand at gardening, though she happily admits she is a mediocre gardener at best. She is, however, an enthusiastic and highly skilled fan of chocolate.
