The Netherworld trilogy is Christopher Rowley's hard-edged future noir series. It follows Rook Venner, a homicide detective in a damaged, highly unequal future America where private muscle, government power, engineered bodies, and advanced weapons all shape daily life.

Rook begins Pleasure Model with what looks like a brutal murder case. At the scene, he finds Plesur, a gene-grown pleasure model who has been created and treated as property. She also appears to hold information someone is willing to kill for. Rook's decision to protect her turns a police investigation into a flight from assassins, corrupt officials, and a much larger political secret.

The case does not stay inside the precinct house for long.

Plesur is central to the series, but she is not simply a clue for Rook to follow. The books keep returning to the question of personhood in a world that has made certain people disposable by design. Rook's growing responsibility toward her, and the danger created by what is hidden in her mind, gives the trilogy its emotional throughline.

In The Bloodstained Man, Rook and Plesur are fugitives. They are hunted by forces that include government and military interests, and an attempted meeting that might explain Plesur's past instead puts them in the hands of mercenaries. The action grows broader and rougher, with Rook forced into a fight for survival while trying to keep the people around him alive.

Money Shot brings the chase toward its source. Rook and Plesur follow the clues planted in her memory to a remote mountain site, where the truth behind a secret operation may explain why powerful people have pursued them so relentlessly. The tension comes from the same basic problem that drives every book: they cannot safely walk away, but finding the answer may be even worse.

These are fast, adult-oriented stories with a mix of detective fiction, dystopian science fiction, conspiracy thriller, and pulp action. The future is deliberately grimy rather than sleek. Readers should expect violence, sexual material, exploitation, and a cynical view of institutions, along with a determined investigator who keeps pushing when quitting would be easier.
