Author bio

Graham Masterton is a Scottish novelist whose work ranges from supernatural horror to crime fiction, historical sagas, disaster stories, and practical nonfiction. Born in Edinburgh in 1946, he entered professional writing through journalism. That background preceded a fiction career built around ordinary people confronting events far beyond their experience, whether the danger comes from a criminal, a public emergency, or a force that seems impossible to explain.

He became a newspaper reporter at seventeen and moved into magazine editing while still young. By twenty-one he was deputy editor of Mayfair, and at twenty-four he became an executive editor of Penthouse. He also wrote advice books about sex and relationships. His career therefore began with several forms of commercial writing, rather than with horror novels alone, and his bibliography has continued to reflect that breadth.

Horror became his best-known field.

His first horror novel, The Manitou, appeared in 1976. It introduced Harry Erskine, a fortune teller drawn into a confrontation with a powerful returning spirit. The book became a bestseller and was adapted into a film starring Tony Curtis. Masterton returned to Harry in later novels, creating a recurring character whose encounters combine supernatural danger with an irreverent sense of humour. The success of that first story established a lasting part of his writing career.

He has repeatedly developed different approaches within horror. Night Warriors places its battles in dreams, where an ancient order protects sleeping people from demonic threats. The Jim Rook novels centre on a teacher whose ability to see supernatural beings exposes dangers around his students. These series use different protagonists and rules, but both make familiar places unstable. Classrooms, homes, and sleeping minds become places where everyday experience offers little protection.

His work also reaches well beyond supernatural fiction. Rich belongs to his historical writing, while Plague approaches fear through a disaster premise. He has written large-scale historical stories as well as shorter horror fiction. In discussing his working methods, he has stressed the importance of settings and the lives of the people who inhabit them. Specific places help ground even his most extravagant supernatural ideas in a recognisable human world.

Ireland provided the setting for another major strand of his career. Masterton lived in Cork for five years with his wife, Wiescka, and that experience informed his novels about Detective Superintendent Katie Maguire. Beginning with the story now known as White Bones, the series follows a senior Garda investigator through violent cases and personal pressures. Its continuing police protagonist gives his interest in disturbing events a different framework from his supernatural series.

His readership extends across several languages.

Wiescka helped bring his books to Polish readers in 1989, and Poland became an important part of his literary life. He later established a short-story competition for people in Polish prisons. His wider support for horror writing includes the French-language Prix Masterton. The Horror Writers Association recognised his career with a Lifetime Achievement Award presented in 2019. He lives in Surrey, England, and continues writing horror and crime fiction, adding new books to a career that began in the newsroom.
