The Vang Books in Order

The Vang trilogy is Christopher Rowley's blend of wide-screen space opera and alien horror. The books are linked by the Vang, an ancient parasitic species engineered by evolution for conquest. A Vang can take over hosts, adapt them into weapons, and turn a local outbreak into a disaster on a planetary scale.

The three novels are connected by history rather than one continuing cast. Each jumps far forward in time and puts new people in the path of a Vang threat. That structure lets the series show how civilizations remember, forget, and try to prepare for an enemy that should have been impossible to survive.

The danger is never just one monster.

In Starhammer, the deepest history comes into view. Long before humanity's rise among the stars, the Vang fought a war against the amphibious Batrachians. The Batrachians built the Starhammer, a weapon of immense destructive power, and the remnants of that war shape a later human conflict with the Laowon Imperium. Jon Iehard, a former slave, is drawn into a fight that could change humanity's future.

The Military Form moves to a later era, when a dormant Vang is discovered near the human world of Saskatch. This form is especially frightening because it understands weapons and technology as well as violence. The outbreak forces people to decide what they are willing to sacrifice when every new host strengthens the enemy.

In The Battlemaster, another Vang form appears on the troubled planet Wexel. Local corruption and social division leave the world badly placed to respond, even as the alien threat grows beyond anyone's private ambitions. The book shifts toward military response and containment, while keeping the series' core fear intact: a clever predator can use human weakness as efficiently as any weapon.

These are brisk, sometimes harsh science fiction adventures. Expect old-school interstellar scale, oppressive empires, military action, body horror, and a steady interest in how dangerous technology changes the choices people make. The Vang themselves are not negotiable villains. They are a survival problem.
