Series background & context
The Books of Arna is a fantasy trilogy set on a far-future world where humanity's past has become legend. Long ago, pollution and collapse nearly erased humankind from Arna. Other intelligent peoples survived and built stable societies, while human survivors on the distant southern continent of Shasht slowly rebuilt their numbers and their old ambitions.
The first book, Ancient Enemy, introduces Thru Gillo, a young watermot who expects a quiet life in the marshes. Instead, he is sent to study among the Assenzi, an isolated people of teachers and scholars. There he learns that the old stories of "Man the Cruel" are more than warnings for children, and that an ancient danger may be moving again.
Arna has a long memory, even when its people do not.
The setting matters as much as any one hero. The Mots and Brilbies have maintained a pre-industrial culture built around limits, balance, and the avoidance of the mistakes that destroyed earlier human civilization. Across the world, the people of Shasht have no idea they share the planet with them. That distance cannot last forever.
The trilogy's main threat is Karnemin, an old sorcerer whose long life and ability to move between bodies make him a danger that is both personal and historical. His return turns old divisions into an immediate crisis. Thru Gillo grows from an untested young man into someone who must understand war, leadership, and the cost of defending a home he had barely begun to see clearly.
The Shasht War widens the conflict as the human powers of Shasht and the peoples of the northern lands move toward open war. In Doom's Break, Thru and his allies face the continuing fight against Karnemin's plans. The story builds from discovery and travel into a larger struggle over who will control Arna's future.
These are big, straightforward adventure fantasies with unusual nonhuman protagonists, large-scale conflict, and a strong environmental idea running beneath the action. There are armies, journeys, old magic, and dangerous secrets, but the books also ask whether a society can avoid repeating a disaster it only half remembers.
Begin with Ancient Enemy. It lays out Arna's history, introduces Thru Gillo, and gives the later wars their full weight.
