Series background & context
Battle Dragons is Christopher Rowley's long-running fantasy sequence about Bazil Broketail and Relkin, the boy assigned to care for him. Bazil is not a pet or a mount. He is a massive, sword-wielding battledragon with his own opinions, pride, and appetite. Relkin is his dragonboy, partner, handler, and closest friend.
The first novel, Bazil Broketail, brings them to Marneri, one of the cities of the Argonath. They hope to earn a place in the Dragon Legions, military units where dragons and humans fight side by side. Their early troubles lead them into a larger mission involving the Great Witch Lessis, a kidnapped queen, and enemies working to break the power of the Argonath.
Bazil and Relkin are a team first.
That partnership carries through the series. Relkin is practical, watchful, and willing to bend rules when the situation demands it. Bazil is brave, stubborn, funny, and often more aware of his own worth than anyone around him. Their bond gives the books a warm center even when the plot sends them into sieges, marches, magical traps, and full-scale battles.
The wider world of Ryetelth is crowded with rival cities, powerful witches, hostile armies, monsters, and the Masters of Padmasa, a continuing enemy force. In A Sword for a Dragon, Bazil receives the powerful dragonsword Ecator before the pair join an expedition into a threatened land. Dragons of War and Battledragon raise the military stakes, taking the 109th Marneri Dragons into invasions and distant campaigns.
Later books push Bazil and Relkin farther from home. A Dragon at Worlds' End strands them in the dangerous continent of Eigo, while Dragons of Argonath and Dragon Ultimate bring the struggle against Waakzaam the Great into the heart of the series. The Wizard and the Floating City is set on the same world but follows Prince Evander on a separate adventure.
Expect classic quest fantasy with a strong military-adventure streak. The tone can shift from banter and creature comedy to tough battlefield danger, but the stories stay focused on loyalty, courage, and making it through impossible situations with the person beside you.
Start with Bazil Broketail. It introduces the world, the Dragon Legions, and the friendship that makes the whole sequence work.
