Mountain Times is John Legg's three-book mountain-man series about Nathaniel Squire and the unforgiving world of the early Rocky Mountain fur trade. The books follow trapping expeditions through dangerous country, where a person's strength matters, but loyalty, skill, and plain luck matter just as much.

Nathaniel Squire is a large, formidable mountain man with the experience to lead others through land they do not understand. In Winter Rage, he guides a trapping expedition into the Rockies. The newcomers may have money and ambition, but the mountains do not care about either. Cold, hunger, treachery, and unfamiliar country make every mile a test.

It is hard country, and the series treats it that way.

Blackfoot Dawn continues the story as Squire and his companions travel through country made more dangerous by an old enemy and a large Blackfoot war party seeking revenge. The book expands the group around Squire and puts friendship under pressure, especially when survival requires people to trust one another without much room for mistakes.

By Mountain Rage, Squire has spent enough time leading trappers and carrying responsibility for other people. The series continues to explore what that responsibility costs him. The fur trade brings opportunity and freedom, but it also brings conflict, sudden violence, and a life where even a successful season can turn bad in a day.

The Rocky Mountains are the real constant. Rivers, snow, passes, camps, rendezvous, and hunting grounds shape the pace of the stories. Legg focuses on the practical side of the frontier, how people eat, travel, work, defend themselves, and get through winter, while keeping the action moving with raids, grudges, and difficult partnerships.

Mountain Times has a rough, adult tone and a close-knit group dynamic. It is not a gentle nostalgia trip to the frontier. The characters are often profane, tired, scared, and still expected to keep going. That gives the camaraderie its value when it appears.

Read the books in order, beginning with Winter Rage. Nathaniel Squire's relationships and the consequences of earlier events carry forward, and the series becomes more rewarding as the same people face new versions of the same hard question: what do you owe the people who trust you when the mountains offer no easy way out?
