Author bio

Miranda Rijks grew up in West Sussex, later spent seventeen years in the Peak District, and eventually moved back to Sussex. Before fiction took over, she built a very different working life, helping new entrepreneurs turn ideas into real businesses and spending more than twenty years setting up, running, and selling businesses of her own.

Writing was there all along. As a child she wrote stories for fun, and later she found herself writing in almost every job she held, business plans, press releases, marketing copy, and website content. When her daughter was young, she also made up continuing bedtime stories night after night, which says a lot about how naturally narrative seems to come to her.

Long before the thrillers, she studied handwriting analysis and published the nonfiction book How Compatible Are You?. She was even asked to analyse the handwriting of famous people for newspapers. That interest in what tiny details reveal about a person later found its way into her fiction, especially in the Dr. Pippa Durrant books.

She also wrote the biography The Eccentric Entrepreneur, which was longlisted for a cricket book award. In 2010, as a mature student, she completed a master's degree in writing and graduated with a first. Even so, she did not yet think of herself as a full-time novelist. Writing still had to fit around work, family, and everything else.

Then life changed course.

In August 2015, Rijks was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma in her right femur, a rare bone cancer. Treatment meant leaving the Peak District for London, going through eleven rounds of chemotherapy, and having her femur removed and replaced. During recovery she started a blog called Brain Sparks and became very aware of how few novels dealt honestly with the raw, exhausting reality of serious illness.

That experience led to Don't Call Me Brave, a novel that looks hard at cancer, fear, marriage, and the strange black humor that can show up in the middle of treatment. After that, she took stock of what she really wanted to do and turned to fiction in earnest. She started writing fiction in 2018, was signed the following year, and has said that writing became a kind of therapy.

The thrillers came next, and that turned out to be the right lane. I Want You Gone opens with a woman reading her own obituary. Fatal Fortune introduces psychologist Dr. Pippa Durrant, whose training in lie detection, micro-expressions, and graphology gives the series its hook. Standalones such as The Visitors, The Arrangement, What She Knew, and The New Neighbour show what readers tend to come to Rijks for, fast pacing, domestic tension, and the sense that one secret can blow apart an entire life.

She is especially interested in family and friend dynamics.

That is why so many of her stories begin in familiar places, a school run, a quiet lane, a holiday rental, a family kitchen, a luxury clinic, a neatly ordered street where everybody seems to know everybody else. The settings sometimes widen out to Switzerland, South Africa, or the Sussex countryside she knows well, but the fear stays close to home. She often writes about scary things that could happen to ordinary people, and that grounded feeling is a big part of her appeal.

Rijks now writes full time, has sold well over a million books, and is a member of both the Society of Authors and the Crime Writers' Association. She lives in West Sussex with her Dutch husband and black Labradors. She still loves the Alps, still knits obsessively, and still seems happiest when she is turning everyday anxieties into sharp, twisty thrillers.
