Author bio
Miranda Dickinson is a novelist and singer-songwriter from the Black Country in England's West Midlands. She grew up in Kingswinford in a creative family, with stories, songs and performance all close at hand. Her parents were folk singers, and that mix of music and storytelling seems to have stayed with her. Long before publication, she was the child who dreamed of seeing her name on the shelves of the local library.
She always wanted to write.
As a teenager she filled notebooks with opening chapters, then stopped for about ten years after someone at sixth form told her writing books was childish. After studying Performance Art, she worked, sang, and got on with life. Then in 2001 a friend gave her an old computer. That clunky machine helped her find her way back to fiction, and the story she began there eventually became her debut novel.
That novel started out as Coffee at Kowalski's, was uploaded to Authonomy, and was spotted by an editor at Avon. Published in 2009 as Fairytale of New York, it became a Sunday Times top ten bestseller within weeks. Dickinson has often talked about how unlikely that felt at the time, which is part of what makes her career story so appealing. It reads less like a grand master plan and more like persistence finally paying off.
Much of her fiction sits in contemporary romance or women's fiction, usually as standalones. Books like Welcome to My World, It Started With A Kiss, A Parcel for Anna Browne, and Somewhere Beyond the Sea are full of ordinary people at turning points, new places, family baggage, fresh starts, and love arriving at inconvenient moments. Readers tend to come to her for warmth, humour, big-hearted communities, and characters who feel bruised but never hopeless.
Place matters in her books.
New York, St Ives, the Black Country, and other lived-in settings do a lot of work in her stories. So do creative jobs and creative dreams. In Our Story and Things We Do for Love, for example, she writes about writers, performers, ambition, self-doubt, and the messy business of building a life while trying to make art. Across the board, she returns again and again to second chances, grief, friendship, and learning to trust yourself.
In recent years she has also stepped into crime fiction under the name M.J. White. The Cora Lael books, beginning with The Secret Voices, show a darker side of her storytelling, but the human focus is still there. Even in crime, she is interested in damaged people, difficult choices, and the way the past keeps pressing on the present.
Away from the novels, Dickinson has written and performed music, vlogged about writing for years, and founded WriteFoxy to support other writers. She has sold more than a million books and been translated widely, but the interesting bit is how grounded she still seems in the place she came from. She lives in Dudley with her husband Bob and their daughter Flo, and she still comes across as someone who knows that making art is both work and a small act of stubborn hope.
